Actualize Virtuous Leadership Qualities

The most effective and authentic leaders tend to be individuals who are responsive in finding ways to bring out the best in others. Organizations that are successful tend to care about cultivating leaders in the soft skills necessary in effectively leading technical individuals in dynamic environments and situations. Foremost, compelling leadership stems from a genuine concern for others and a genuine caring for the work. Leadership requires emotional investment and connection to the well-being of others. When authentic leadership is actualized, individuals want to be participants in an efficacious community meeting one’s needs. Learn how to transform your leadership style and actualize authentic leadership qualities that others will want to follow.

Virtuous Leaders are Made

Leaders are made and this can happen with child, youth, and adult education and training. Leaders can be trained within the family structure while growing up as well as instruction taught in the education system and the workplace. Leaders can be made by specific efforts, acknowledgment of, and attention to the endeavor. Leaders who have impact and authentic followership never stop learning, lead by example, do the right thing, make ethical decisions, are courageous, self aware, reflective, and understand the value of feedback.

In many workplace settings, management tends to lead with bully tactics and fear strategies. This creates high turn–over, mistrust, little to no buy–in when new agendas are presented, miscommunication, no communication, and toxic work environments. Leadership effectiveness depends on a variety of cultivated personal characteristics that can be synthesized in compelling ways.

Portugal’s Virtuous Leadership Protocol

  1. Develop and cultivate leadership in others in your sphere of influence. Advancing others advances you and advances society.
  2. Be a conduit or connector to people, ideas, resources, concepts.
  3. Go on a listening and observing tour with the people you lead, manage, or are involved with.
  4. Create an accomplishment habit everyday.
  5. Find ways to praise and celebrate others by highlighting virtues they exhibit.
  6. Point out, mention, and identify traditional and cardinal virtues when communicating with others. Tie in with experiences, situations, and behaviors.
  7. Have a teaching disposition.
  8. Have an open peer-review sharing ethos.
  9. Have a ceaseless learning mindset.
  10. Learn about the Trivium and logical fallacies and teach others.
  11. Apply, manage, and lead with an Aristotelian virtue philosophy in personal and professional daily practice.
  12. Develop your leadership brand with these themes and communicate the intention in daily practice with others.
  13. Help and guide others to critically think about developing their leadership brand.
  14. Find ways to teach, promulgate, and incorporate a virtuous leadership model in everything you do.
  15. Envision, foster, and promote what could be rather than tolerating what is.

Eight Step Decision-Making Process in Rational Decision Making

Leadership abilities and understanding the Eight Step Decision-Making Process are effective assets managed by competent leaders in educational settings. For managers and leaders in educational environments, leadership studies and management research are necessary tools when making business decisions that can impact the health and well-being of an institution and employees. In addition, it is important for leaders and managers to understand how to motivate, inspire, and challenge those they lead.
Becker’s (2011) Eight Step Decision–Making Process includes:
Step 1: Define the problem.
Step 2: Determine requirements.
Step 3: Establish goals.
Step 4: Identify alternatives.
Step 5: Define criteria.
Step 6: Select a decision–making tool.
Step 7: Evaluate alternatives against criteria.
Step 8: Validate solution(s) against problem statement.
